Honda S2000 Roadster Could be Built to Celebrate Honda’s 70th Anniversary

Rumor has it that Honda plans to celebrate its 70th anniversary in 2018 with the rebirth of the Honda S2000 roadster. The first S2000 roadster was launched in 1998 for Honda’s 50th anniversary, so it’s a popular idea among enthusiasts.

Honda may also produce a commemorative car and a motorcycle for the anniversary as well. A source at Car and Driver says the car will be similar in size to the Mazda MX-5 Miata, but “the Honda will have a lot more power.”

Those in the know may note that Honda doesn’t have a current platform for a roadster, but it also didn’t have one for its NSX sports car or the mini roadster S660 before their debut, so a new roadster can’t be ruled out.

The Acura Precision Concept, a hybrid with rear-wheel drive, was also introduced at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year, which could lead into the anniversary model. The 2018 S2000 will reportedly have a Civic Type R 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with horsepower at 306.

In May of this year, Honda had already started using manufacturing facilities in Columbus, Ohio, for research and development. The NSX sports car is also produced in Honda’s Ohio facilities.
