As hybrid and EV technology advances, the auto industry is producing more and more options for fans of the green car segment. Honda’s latest foray into the class is the 2019 Honda Insight, and we’re looking forward to stocking it here at Bill Walsh Honda.
Honda Insight production recently began at the automaker’s plant in Greensburg, Indiana. Honda invested $32.5 million in Greensburg to prepare for manufacturing more hybrids and EVs in the future. Three plants in Ohio will also be a part of Insight production, building its gas engine, electric motor, and battery pack. These plants received $29 million in investments.
To build the 2019 Insight, the Greensburg plant uses a modular subassembly technique that was first introduced in the 2016 Civic. The plant built a 19,200-square-foot expansion to house the new equipment needed for attaching the Honda Insight’s front-end module.
The production version of the Honda Insight debuted at the New York Auto Show in March, where the hybrid showed off a powertrain that pairs a generator motor and propulsion motor to produce 151 horsepower and 197 lb-ft of torque. No official word is out yet about EPA fuel ratings, but Honda claims the Insight can drive 55 MPG in the city.
